This weekend was full of learning and exploring Pilates with Deborah Lessen, who taught an amazing workshop at The Pilates Center in Rockville, Maryland.
Pilates – Visual Assessments and Dynamic Alignment
Day 1 taught us the skills needed to visually assess our clients correctly.
We had some very different body types to work with (our models were workshop participants), making it fun and interesting. Once we pinpointed the issues, Deborah taught us how to look at those bodies and address the issues presented. She provided guided solutions to client-specific issues. It was interesting to see how the problems could successfully be corrected.
Day 2 focused on the dynamic alignment of the lower body, based on the work taught to Deborah by Carola Trier.
This day was all about posture, alignment, core strength, using your hamstrings, and opening your hips. (This may sound familiar to my clients, as we often address this in our sessions)
We were reminded of how important the feet and their function are in Pilates and everyday life. Deborah dove into the Pilates repertoire, using the Reformer, Cadillac, Balls, Theraband, and the Magic Circle, to help us understand how we can help our clients achieve better posture, alignment, and fitness-related activities by working on their feet.
Have you looked at your feet lately? If not, let’s take a closer look when I see you next time. Here is a hint: “Try to pick up a pen with your toes”!
