Definition: A number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime.
As a German, the word bucket list sounds very, well, yes, foreign.
It translates to Wunschliste der Lebenstraeume (A Wishlist of Dreams in one’s Lifetime)
I never thought about my life that way until I came to America. I had wished for a long time to live somewhere else but in Germany.
I was determined to make my dream come true and let NOTHING stand in the way. It was the only item on my bucket list, and it was a big one.
I prepared for four years to take the leap. First, by attending evening classes to study English. Second, by working with the German foreign services who promised the opportunity of working abroad. Arranging for my life abroad, I did not put my life in Germany on hold but slowly built the dream that I was about to enjoy.
It was not easy at times; thinking about leaving my family and friends behind was difficult. They would be, after all, an ENTIRE ocean away. Starting a new job in a country I had only heard of and read about.
It was so exciting and scary at the same time.
Then, I was convinced that I would marry my “cowboy” (I can see that grin on your face).
The Bucket List
I have lived in the United States for over thirty years and never looked back. All my planning paid off, working towards my goal and never letting up even when times got tough at work or in my English classes.
Once my bucket list was empty, I added running a marathon to it (I did that). Now, there was room for another item, and I completed my first Ironman (I did that, too).
One of the items recently checked off my bucket list is Antelope Canyon, AZ.
